Re: UK pension living in Japan
This has brought up a few questions in my mind. I assume the taxable event will be "when the money is brought over to Japan?" I assume it will be calculated on the "exchange rate" on the transfer day? No, the taxable event is when you receive the pension and the exchange rate on...

Re: Work problems.
I think the best people to ask are the Labour Union or the prefecture's work/labour board. They understand the law and the rules, and can speak to them on your behalf.

Re: PR Application with no Job?
Well, I can only speak from what I have heard from some others, Make sure all the city taxes, national taxes, health insurance, and pension payments are up to date and paid for. Then, stick it in, and wait. I have heard a few getting rejected because they have fallen behind on payments. Back in the ...

Read Die With Zero and Four Thousand Weeks. What about your three kids? Sometimes we don't need to give our kids much. It might be ok if you're a millionaire, but I have met many a poor grandparent, and a very rich child earning over $150,000 a year while their parents live on a state pension. We g...

Re: Well, this is a wild ride (just muttering to my n00b self)
After taking the plunge with this whole investing malarkey a couple of weeks back, I've been logging in every day to see how things are going (yes I know I should be doing "fire and forget", but being new to all this, I want to get a sense of what's going on) and after some encouraging in...

Re: The names Bond.
i still seem no clearer on whether to buy bonds since i don't have a 20,30 years time frame. I think you ought look at your portfolio in its entirety. That is where myindex.jp is quite nice, as you can play around with different asset allocations and see what having different asset classes typicall...

Re: The names Bond.
Well this is much more complicated than I ever thought. I wonder if bonds are better for big pension funds, knowing that some people will die before they ever claim more than the companies can pay out. and they''ll also have the younger workers buying more bonds k owing there is maybe a 20-year peri...

Re: The names Bond.
Your idea has kinda made me consider that I could put a few million or a couple of years' worth of yen into the GLOBAL BOND ETF, and if there is a big downturn, or crash nearer or during retirement, I could turn to the bonds which guarantee a return (NO?) and ride the downslope until the stocks and...

Re: The names Bond.
Or if I just need money five years from now, if my equities are down big time I will be happy to have some bond fund to sell instead. Your idea has kinda made me consider that I could put a few million or a couple of years' worth of yen into the GLOBAL BOND ETF, and if there is a big downturn, or c...
