I used them several years ago for a straightforward return and it went smoothly.

Re: Flying to Ireland

Further to my earlier post about couples potentially requiring a marriage certificate to stay in one room in hotels in Qatar: * I have never been to Qatar * I have not unearthed the specific Qatari law on this point * The internet has many accounts of rules and reality being different, eg https://ww...

Re: Flying to Ireland

Regarding the Middle East routings: * Etihad (based in Abu Dhabi, UAE) usually have layover/stopover deals; free or half price or discounted hotel stays. We flew with them (to/from the UK) in 2022 with a layover outbound (sub-24-hours stop, so luggage was checked all the way through) and a stopover ...

Re: Q: obtaining UK passport for child born in Japan (UK/Japanese parents)

I may have time to provide some further thoughts/links during the week Apologies; one of my children was hospitalised. Below is both lengthy and incomplete, but hopefully contains some useful links and points relevant to the case. In due course, some of the info from this thread and elsewhere will ...

Re: Q: obtaining UK passport for child born in Japan (UK/Japanese parents)

Was just in the midst of posting that I obtained extra copies of my children’s shussetodoke kisaijiko shomeisho (出生届記載事項証明書) from the Legal Affairs Bureau (法務局; houmukyoku). The process was swift and free. (In my case this was not for passport applications.) However, that’s no longer helpful to ‘UK ...

Re: Simple (?) Spousal Visa Question

I applied for a spouse visa at the Japanese Embassy in London (UK) in 2017. At that time there was the option to apply without a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE). It seemed that applicants were being steered towards the CoE route but in my circumstances it was less burdensome to meet the embassy’s d...

Re: UK citizens can now vote from Japan

Regrettably, I never updated my voting address from my London rental address to my parents'/sister's address before leaving the UK, meaning proxy voting would be (have been?) possible... Postal proxy is possible. So for general elections you could have a proxy who is registered to vote but not in y...

Re: Is it worth paying off your student loans early? UK

It’s a personal call. And it’s very important for it to be an informed call. It can be quite nuanced. In addition to individuals being in different circumstances, different cohorts are on different deals, eg the government expects only 27% of full-time undergrads starting in 2022/3 to repay in full,...
