Yes, but knowing what I know now I would probably just have had my wife open a Japanese brokerage account and we do everything through that, which would mean taxes are held correctly and less hassle for reporting to JP government. Then nothing to report to the US.

I ended up using PlanVision who got me started with InteractiveBrokers.

Good advice to get started, but now it's a pain dealing with reporting the tax-related stuff on the JP side.

However, having an IB account is very nice for 800 yen transfers of money and very cheap currency exchange. I’m not sure if TDA has such a quick and easy way to get money from Japan to your account. Ah okay. I get paid by a Japanese organization, so there's no way I would be able to pass the initial screening for sign up then. You should be fine, though since you already have an account.

Did they ask for your employer's address? That's what I have been told makes it difficult for those working in Japan.
