Re: Selling a flat in the UK
Don't sell it, the Japanese tax office will really go after you especially if you have been reporting it in your yearly tax return with depreciation. Although you probably will be able to subtract the capital gains tax you paid in the UK from anything owed in capital gains in Japan.

Re: Voluntary UK pension contribution
The thing I’m really struggling with is making the payments. I got a letter telling how much I owe for each year that I have missed and I that I can make payments for those years from the site they list. Turns out I can’t do that because I don’t live in England. Apparently expats have to add up the...

Re: UK Debanking - Lloyds & Barclycard query
I am still with Lloyds with a Japanese address and no longer with Barclaycard because of inactivity with a Japanese address. If you tell Lloyds that you are living in Japan, they will ask you for your TIN number (my number). I use my Lloyds Bank a lot and would be in a lot of trouble if I was debank...

Re: Elementary School Public or Private Japanese School
Our experience was that public schools in Japan are excellent, especially through elementary school. We had very positive experiences for our two at elementary school in Japan. Over that time, they were also able to go to the UK for primary school for one year and a British international school in ...

Re: Why is there so much confusion around pensions?
Mercer have done some work on pension funds and rank the UK much more highly than Japan https://www.mercer.com/insights/investments/market-outlook-and-trends/mercer-cfa-global-pension-index/ Japan is rated C on a scale or A to E. Japan scores particularly poorly on sustainability (D). Really curiou...

Re: tax rebate
My accountant files my return at the end of February and it took a month to get the rebate, unusually long this year I thought. Normally, it takes two to three weeks.

JAL airmiles visa- a modest yearly fee and you can take out card loans. The airmiles are only really worth it for domestic flights and I have used them a lot recently. Sorry I am copying and pasting from another post on this site, but my Apple account was hacked, and the Japanese hacker got away wit...

Re: Flying to Ireland
First things first, you are doing the right thing in flying at September instead of August. It is not just flights that will be cheaper, but hotels and events will be off peak prices, too. Also the weather isn't that bad, still catch the tail end of the summer. I have fond memories of taking my two ...

Re: WHAT AND HOW DID YOU PAY FOR YOUR DETACHED HOUSE?
Paid 55 million yen for a Mitsui Home new house in Fukuoka ken, my wife really enjoyed the whole building and interior design process. We are on a housing estate where they would only certain house builders and Tama home was definitely not one of them. Financed through SMBC with a 10-million-yen dep...

Along with my Japanese partner, we own a house in West Tokyo where we live with young family However, I have a too good to turn down job offer overseas that is attractive enough to do for a few years with the aim of coming...
