Stay away from REVOLUT!

Hi all, I recently opened a REVOLUT bank account after having been on the waiting list for a long time. So far, the experience has been terrible. 2/10.. would NOT recommend. Here's why: 1) Inability to withdraw cash from most ATMs in Japan. This was my bad.. I didn't read the small print, and I just...

Re: Backpaying UK pension (Class 3)

Hi all, Here's an update on my own attempts to back-pay UK state pension. According to my NI records (viewable online after registering with HMRC) I have three (consecutive) years of full contributions plus another (non-consecutive) full year of contributions, giving me four years of full contributi...

Work until death?!

Hi all, This is a rather grim topic, and somewhat antithetical to the purpose of " retire japan", but I've had a couple of colleagues, students, and friends tell me recently that they don't plan to retire, and health permitting, to just keep working until they die! One case was a Japanese ...

Backpaying UK pension (Class 3)

So, following Ben's advice, I wrote to the UK pension service last October inquiring about the possibility of making voluntary Class 2 contributions. I finally received a letter back this MAY(!) telling me that... I'm not entitled to pay Class 2 contributions, and will have to pay Class 3 contributi...

Opening a UK bank account as a non-resident

Hi All, This is for UK expats wanting to open a new UK bank account while resident in Japan. I found myself in this situation after my old accounts at Barclays and HSBC were closed. It seems that most UK bank accounts have very strict rules on residency these days, e.g. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/f...

Passive income from AirBnB?

Does anyone have any experience of letting out a room or apartment via AirBnB? I know the legal status of AirBnB was recently ratified in Japan: http://fortune.com/2017/06/09/airbnb-legal-in-japan/ Although apparently you can only let the property out for 180 days a year, and you have to register wi...

Withdrawing money from THEO (in alternative currencies)

Assuming I want to close my THEO account at some point in the future, I wonder whether it's possible to withdraw in a currency other than yen, e.g. dollar or sterling? If so, how would one go about doing this?

Cheers!

Re: some Transferwise news

Just tried signing up for it and it says "this service is not available in your country yet" so it looks like you can't sign up for it in Japan. However, if and when it comes to Japan I'm definitely going to sign up. I haven't been able to open a current account in the UK as a non-resident...
