Re: Does it make sense to continue with the same strategy with this JPY/USD rate?

I think assuming BoJ won't change policy is far too optimistic...... Just the timing is uncertain. Policy change yes - indeed they have already made policy changes under Ueda. But even if they scrap YCC, and NIRP, will they still maintain a loose monetary policy posture? I think they absolutely wil...

Re: iDeCo Robo Advisor Portfolio at MONEX...yay or nay?

I'm planning to set up an iDeCo account at Monex. The portfolio that their Robo Advisor suggested for a low risk tolerance person (risk level 2 which is second from the most low risk) was this one with an expense ratio of 0.1366% incl VAT. Any good? One thing that worries me about this suggested po...

Re: Inheritance tax and re-entry permit

It attenuates intergenerational wealth transfer and accumulation Well Japan could use some more wealth accumulation and capital formation, I think. I’m holding out hope that these taxes are abolished before I have to pay them. (Yes I don’t fancy the odds, but with property prices rising in Tokyo th...

Re: Market Fluctuations

My wife and I joined NISA early in 2024 during the highest point in the TOPIX and SP500 indexes ever. I know dollar cost averaging is supposed to insolate you from the ups and downs, but the markets seems to turning the other way now, and part of me is sweating a little because our funds are turnin...

Re: Children's Accounts - Deposits and Gift Tax

It’s an interesting topic… Starkimpossibility’s initial comment on that Reddit thread started out with: “…Regularly gifting money/assets to your child, to take advantage of the 1.1 million yen annual tax-free gift threshold, is a common and legitimate strategy.” But then all these other buts come up...

Re: Children's Accounts - Deposits and Gift Tax

Chat-GPT is a very dangerous resource to use for tax questions, especially bilingual ones. Remember, it's often using data from forums like this one (and Reddit) as an uncited source. Yes. I asked it the question first in Japanese, before telling it to translate it to English. So I hope that the an...

Re: Children's Accounts - Deposits and Gift Tax

For what it’s worth I asked a question to ChatGPT and then had it give me the answer in English: “If you gave money to your child to invest in J-NISA and the gift exceeds the annual gift tax exemption limit (usually 1.1 million yen), then the excess amount may be subject to gift tax. Additionally, i...

Re: Children's Accounts - Deposits and Gift Tax

Who is the gifter, is one factor, per my understanding from an inheritance tax book I borrowed from my library. If a grandparent gives a minor grandchild money, my understanding is it’s all clear (assuming the parent generation in the middle is still alive) so long as the recipient is under the annu...

Re: Any thoughts on eMAXIS Slim Balance (8 Asset Equalization Type)

It’s better than nothing for people who really can’t be bothered, but why not choose your own allocation, if you are so inclined, I say.

Re: Taxable investment withdrawals: FIFO?

If you had two taxable accounts, you could segregate your short and long term positions by those accounts (buying the exact same fund / security).
