thanks. That is what I expected. I don't mind doing it for the 2022 filing. I really wanted it to file a correction on 2021.

any way to recover last year's ".data" file for taxes

I managed to lose the .data file for my 2021 Japan Tax returns. There is no way to recover via the e-tax site, right?

Re: Windfall Elimination Provision!

Thanks for your reply. That makes sense. My thought after reading your reply was that it was just part of my severance package (and it was). I ended up with a lot of foreign tax credits to carry forward and no foreign income to apply them to. I just searched for WEP and severance and found the follo...

Re: Windfall Elimination Provision!

I don't think Japan has the equivalent of WEP. I would imagine that as a resident of Japan you simply pay taxes based on the public-pension rate for the combined benefits. WEP is a US thing that actually lowers the benefits you receive before taxation kicks in (anyone else know of something similar...

Re: Listed stocks (for Japanese tax purposes)

Just FYI....This clearly includes stocks traded on foreign commodity markets in the "listed stocks" bucket (at least that is my take if I run it through google translate): https://www.nta.go.jp/taxes/shiraberu/t ... u/1463.htm OK, stocks and ETFs. But what about mutual funds? They are not...

I think it depends how you are taking the distributions. The IRAs have an RMD (required minimum distribution) tied to the ages my parents would have been. I follow that minimum. Vanguard provides a 1099-R and all of the money is taxable on my US taxes. On the US taxes it ends up classified under pe...

Re: Foreign Pension Tax Ramifications

Re-reading the section on 'Public Pension Deduction'. You may be able to claim this deduction. 'Public Pensions' means: public servant pensions, approved fund pensions, national pensions, or other pensions paid under social insurance schemes. If your pension falls into one of these categories, then...

Re: Listed stocks (for Japanese tax purposes)

Listed stocks are any stocks listed on any Stock Exchange, i.e. post-IPO, so any ETFs traded publicly on an Exchange are "listed". The Japanese is 上場株式等 = JouJou Kabushiki Nado = Stocks, etc. Listed on any Public Exchange. You are very likely correct, but I was told at the tax office that...

Re: declaring foreign assets on Japanese tax return

... I know this is an old thread, but I was questioning whether I was handling my MMF correctly on the FA5102. On FA5102 what 国外財産の区分 (Classification of foreign property) do you specify for the MMF? 非上場株式 Unlisted stocks? My MMF is a US Vanguard Fund so I have been using Unlisted stock. I also have...
