Re: Saving/Investing options

I agree with adamu: if you'll be leaving Japan in a couple of years it's probably not worth setting things up here but instead build a foundation in NZ.

No language issues, and you'll be able to continue using the same providers after you move.

Having the two asset classes mixed in the fund kind of misses the point IMO: I'd want to be selling bonds after a stock crash etc 🤔

Re: Sanity check on tax implications of applying for PR

Interesting thread. Thanks for this. Has anyone investigated the possibility to avoid the withholding taxes in the case of Japanese online brokers - eg Rakuten - incase we sell when we’re overseas in a jurisdiction with no capital gains on equities? This thread has got me thinking - maybe all the m...

Re: Selling English books

Facebook groups. Or if Ben and other members are fine with it, list them here. I would definitely be interested. Don't do FB. Is it ok with Ben and others to list them here? There's 7 hardbacks and about 50+ paperbacks. (The + means those I plan to re-read one final time before letting them go.) On...

Re: Tax Avoision (“…I say, ‘Avoision’”)

Don’t think this is correct. Lots of people confuse permanent residency for visa purposes with permanent residency for tax purposes when it’s possible to be the latter without being the former. Overseas gifts and inheritances are separate issue. This site explains it well. https://argentumwealth.co...

Re: Tax Avoision (“…I say, ‘Avoision’”)

I lived in Japan in the early 2000s and I never heard about Japan taxing foreign money/gains. If this is now the case, this is likely to affect my decision to return at some point. Please humor me with a hypothetical. I’m Canadian (or simply not Japanese) living in Japan on a work visa (non PR) and...

Re: Tax Avoision (“…I say, ‘Avoision’”)

Moral concerns aside, is there much to hear about Japan going after foreigners for failing to report on such things? I know some people who were called into the tax office to explain certain bank transfers/transactions, which resulted in them paying back taxes and penalties. Enforcement likely depe...

Re: Investing in stocks through Interactive Brokers

Hi Lucas

You should be able to buy ETFs through IB Japan.

My understanding is that they may be able to transfer common stocks/ETFs to IB in another country. Probably best to confirm with them directly though.
