Re: Receiving uk pension while living in Japan.
OK, I wonder if I have figured the above discussion out right. Just curious so I’m doing a calculation below. So imagine say sb has 4 million in combined state pensions (the Japanese one, the UK one and the ideco). Then would the following calculation get you the figure that is subject to taxation? ...

Re: Declaring interest earned by savings accounts outside of Japan
I think in Japan they would probably be taxed as “occasional income” but please check! The other thing is I’m not sure if people are allowed to hold premium bonds if they live in Japan.

Question about overseas pensions in general
Hi guys, I remember sb in the forum posting a story about a Japanese woman who inherited her husband’s social security pension from the US, and was surprised when she received a large tax bill. So my understanding is that her case relates to a state pension. I am wondering if the same treatment woul...

Re: Can NICs application cause a residency challenge?
Hmm, well there are certainly people who maybe get sent over by their employer to work in Japan, so I guess they start full-time from day one, but many people come as a spouse of a Japanese person and look for work or come by themselves and look for an employer, so only people in the first case woul...

Re: Can NICs application cause a residency challenge?
Thank you for your feedback! So I wonder what class (2 or 3) a person would receive if they were doing say: A) A part-time job B) A collection of part-time jobs C) Freelance work Th other thing is I may no longer have physical proof (like payslips) of employment that happened a really really long ti...

Can NICs application cause a residency challenge?
Hi guys, I’ve lived In this lovely country Japan the past thirty years. I’ve been wondering if an application to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions has ever been known to lead to a residency challenge by HMRC? I sometimes read expat financial sites, and a lot of them say that UK expats l...

Yen falling like a stone
Guys, last Friday the yen acted like the world was coming to an end, and I suspect it could weaken further given the BOJ said nothing to support the yen following its meeting. It’s certainly the weakest level by far since I came to Japan So I’d like to ask, does anyone feel they have words of wisdom...

Re: Brits: sign this petition (foreign spouse related)
You know guys, I thought I was dreaming when I read this news. I agree that it is a horrible infringement of human rights if people have to choose between caring for elderly parents and being with a spouse. It also serves to remind me, and maybe you guys too, that Japan has been very kind to us. I o...

This has a discriminatory feel to it, but look on the bright side…it likely helps to protect you from theft.

Re: HMRC Mistakes and issues (UK)
Thank you for the link, Moneymatters. Greatly appreciated. Actually what I was trying to confirm was whether: 1) In the period between April 2024 and April 2025, a person living outside the UK could (for the first time) apply to do class 2 contributions? Or: 2) Whether the right to apply for class 2...
