Can NICs application cause a residency challenge?
Hi guys, I’ve lived In this lovely country Japan the past thirty years. I’ve been wondering if an application to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions has ever been known to lead to a residency challenge by HMRC? I sometimes read expat financial sites, and a lot of them say that UK expats l...

Yen falling like a stone
Guys, last Friday the yen acted like the world was coming to an end, and I suspect it could weaken further given the BOJ said nothing to support the yen following its meeting. It’s certainly the weakest level by far since I came to Japan So I’d like to ask, does anyone feel they have words of wisdom...

Re: Brits: sign this petition (foreign spouse related)
You know guys, I thought I was dreaming when I read this news. I agree that it is a horrible infringement of human rights if people have to choose between caring for elderly parents and being with a spouse. It also serves to remind me, and maybe you guys too, that Japan has been very kind to us. I o...

This has a discriminatory feel to it, but look on the bright side…it likely helps to protect you from theft.

Re: HMRC Mistakes and issues (UK)
Thank you for the link, Moneymatters. Greatly appreciated. Actually what I was trying to confirm was whether: 1) In the period between April 2024 and April 2025, a person living outside the UK could (for the first time) apply to do class 2 contributions? Or: 2) Whether the right to apply for class 2...

Bitcoin: So at the end of the day, is it worth it?
Guys, how do you feel about Bitcoin now? All these years, I’ve been tearing my hair out wondering what people see in it: I simply can’t find a way to judge if it’s cheap or expensive? Even way back in more innocent times, when Bitcoin was only worth $100 or $1000, I was saying to myself, well hey it...

Re: SBI Securities and points - Safe and secure
Thank you very much for your replies Zeroshiki and Adamu. Zeroshiki, thank you for your detailed response! It’s interesting you’ve done related work in the past. Is it in finance or a different industry? Anyway, you told me a lot of things I was unaware of. You also made me laugh, as I had to look u...

SBI Securities and points - Safe and secure
Hi guys, I’ve been looking at the different kinds of points offered by SBI Securities, e.g. T-points, Docomo points etc. Certainly some ways they give you points, e.g. for existing account holdings, sound attractive. However, do you guys think that linking your account with receiving outside points ...

Re: Matsui Securities and points
Thank you for your good advice! I guess glossy advertising shouldn’t be taken so seriously…
All the same, even then their points seem to bad relative to the competition.

Re: HMRC Mistakes and issues (UK)
Oh…so fhis means that even after April 2024 people can still apply (for the first time) to make class 2 contributions, if they are living outside the UK? Is that right?
