Re: Preplanning your own funeral

I've wondered if this is OK... Not the human BBQ out back, but the scattering of ashes. I'd like my ashes to be scattered at some of my favourite places that have meant a lot to me over the years i.e. mountain tops, camping spots, rivers, lakes, local 7-11 :lol: etc. Is that OK, or more of a "...

Re: Preplanning your own funeral

Just to piggy back on this, is a funeral involving a crematorium required by law in Japan? The law seems to prohibit "burying of remains or cremated remains on any land not designated as a cemetery." This seems especially set in stone in Tokyo where burials are prohibited by municipal ord...

My relative had had several back surgeries and the (surprisingly large) screws from those had survived the cremation.

Re: Preplanning your own funeral

Others may have more detailed information but I had a Japanese in-law pass recently and he had done a lot of the planning years ago. This is just my recollection as an observer. (1) Morgue (安置所): Unsure if he had decided this in advance. (2) Crematorium (火葬場). He may have had the crematorium decided...

Re: Ski Insurance

I booked some package tours through this site where you just check a box to add travel insurance for X number of days (https://tour.vipliner.biz/hoken/). However, after looking at the insurance company's website it seems there's no option to book online...

Re: Rare case inheritance question

@Nancy

That's another aspect I hadn't considered. At this point I'm wishing I had just liquidated the entire thing before coming to Japan--paid the huge tax bill and be done with it..

Whinging aside, big thanks to everyone on here who shares their knowledge on these relatively unknown topics.

Re: Rare case inheritance question

Japantous, a rare case inheritance question, but not so rare. I am experiencing almost exactly as you are (modifying some dates and monetary amounts and the fact that I am back in Japan already on a spousal visa). As Tykdon responded, this is basically my understanding after hours and hours of rese...

Re: Rare case inheritance question

Thank you Tkydon. I am getting a better grasp of how to handle this. After talking with the US-side financial planners, I believe I will take a withdrawal of a certain % of the IRA in Jan 2024, before moving back to Japan. For the 2024 tax year I should be earning close to nothing in the US in terms...

Re: Rare case inheritance question

When you are resident in Japan, they will be subject to Capital Gains Tax in Japan, and you will be able to claim the Foreign Tax Credit in Japan for tax paid on the disbursements in the US. I really appreciate your comprehensive reply! I did not know about the Foreign Tax Credit so I will definite...
