Re: US WHT on bond ETFs like BND or BSV in NISA growth account?

Thanks. It seems that both Monex and SBI are aware that interest-related dividends are not subject to US withholding tax and that their local custodian makes adjustments to any withholding tax withheld from interest-related dividends on ETFs. This means I suppose that if I hold US Treasury Bond ETF...

Re: Yay or nay? Rakuten Index Balance Fund (70% VT + 30% yen-hedged BNDW) in NISA account?

This would just be for the NISA part. ;) I'm thinking of NISA as the last account that'll be cashed out, after all the money in my taxable account has been drawn down. Since this will be when I'm probably quite decrepit, I am thinking that something which doesn't need any looking after but will kee...

Re: Yay or nay? Rakuten Index Balance Fund (70% VT + 30% yen-hedged BNDW) in NISA account?

That's true. Might be something to be said for a balanced fund which overweights Japanese stocks and bonds like the Nissay Index Balanced Fund (equally weighted 4 asset classes type) with an expense ratio of 0.154% ? That one buys foreign stocks direct rather than via a US ETF, and so in a NISA acc...

Re: Yay or nay? Rakuten Index Balance Fund (70% VT + 30% yen-hedged BNDW) in NISA account?

Also, your future earnings and your Japanese pension are "yen hedges" in a way, as that part of your future income is all yen-denominated, not to mention your Japanese bank account. If you don't want to leave your spare cash in a bank account, there are JGBi funds, which roll over inflati...

Re: Yay or nay? Rakuten Index Balance Fund (70% VT + 30% yen-hedged BNDW) in NISA account?

It might be quite tax-inefficient, especially in a NISA due to not being able to claim the foreign dividend deduction on the US tax. https://retirewiki.jp/wiki/Japanese_global_index_funds#Comparison_with_US_ETFs That's true. Might be something to be said for a balanced fund which overweights Japane...

Re: BNDX etf? eMAXIS Slim 先進国債券インデックス fund? or NF・外国債ヘッジ有ETF?

Hi. You're right. The eMAXIS Slim Developed Market Bond Index Fund is not currency hedged. I think that the idea about hedging bond funds is that the bonds allocation is supposed to stand fast when the stock prices plummet so that you'll have some capital to put into buying the now-cheap stocks in ...

I use the eMAXIS Slim one you mentioned. You might find this interesting: https://www.retirejapan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=38854#p38854 This was really interesting. Thank you. I think that I would much rather have less volatility than potential high returns over the long term once I am retired. Th...

Re: BNDX etf? eMAXIS Slim 先進国債券インデックス fund? or NF・外国債ヘッジ有ETF?

I suppose one of these days, bonds will finally have a good year. Relieving the pressure off the bond aficionados, and the "I told you so" bond folks will finally be smiling, a little bit. Having a good year is not the purpose of holding bonds. Reducing volatility before/after retirement ...

Own bonds after you retire?

Retirement is still some way off for me, but this was really interesting: Many of you have probably read or read about this recent paper by Cederberg et al recommending 100% equities not just before but even after retirement: Beyond the Status Quo: A Critical Assessment of Lifecycle Investment Advic...
