Keep an eye on your family members' incomes!

I got a letter from the tax office saying I needed to cough up another ¥200,000 for my 2023 taxes.

This was due to my 'dependent' son making over the 1,030,000 limit in 2022 (something I had no idea he did).

With all income attached to My Number, there is no skating around it.

Does said student have a NISA or iDeCo?

Rakuten Card, NISA, etc... ???

If not yet 18, then a Family Card...
20. He has an SBI NISA which I guess we can link to the card if we want.

Re: For US folks - new ID.me vs ssa.gov login

I'm not sure about using ID.me for SSA login, versus the 'regular' way you mention, so this is not a direct answer to your question. But I did create an ID.me account for IRS purposes a couple months ago--photos of suitable IDs submitted, then a video call to confirm those, and setup did get done. ...

Good luck.
I tried to register, got frustrated and gave up. I suppose at some point I will have to actually complete it.

Search for Sayonara sales, Mottainai or similar keywords.

Or if Ben and other members are fine with it, list them here. I would definitely be interested.
The Osaka and Kobe sayonara sales on FB.

Re: Best Credit Card for a Student

Good question and I am also interested in good suggestions. I was thinking about just a SONY Bank account and a debit card as a first step for our eldest. With very limited/no income is it easy to get a credit card for a youngster? We ended up getting a Mitsui Sumitomo card (top of the list). Hassl...

That does look good for a young business person who flies a fair bit.

Currency ratio for investments

For most domestic and overseas investments the answer is easy, although a bit complicated to calculate for international index funds.

I think my current mix is this:
USD 69%
JPY 25%
AUD 5%
GPB 1%

Re: HS & University fees

I should add one son went to the USA on a high school exchange program. That was at a public US school and the 'non-profit' program cost us about ¥1,500,000 and included a homestay. https://study.yfu.org/ FYI: I did a lot of shopping around, and a lot of public schools charge non-citizens (or even c...

Re: HS & University fees

The year abroad was almost for free, as it consisted of five months “Baito” in my home country, (and that came with a room), travel throughout Europe, followed by another job while staying at a friend’s place. Very good - though not always pleasant - experience. Having a job and a free place to sta...
