Re: Entering semi-retirement - what now?
No real deadline to sign up, and you can choose not to (but if you’re entitled to, why not eh?). The sooner the better but you need a document from your company (forgot the name, it says what was the reason for you leaving and a bunch of other stuff) and that take a week or 2 so you should tell your...

Social insurance potentially being added to financial income
Has anybody been following this topic? The government potentially considering this. This would open Pandora’s box for things like “we only said Nisa was tax free, and social insurance is not a tax” or for company employees having to pay both on salary and financial income like dividends, capital gai...

Re: what is spousal credit?
I still don't get it. Does that mean that my wife, my only heir or beneficiary, will not be taxed on any inheritance she gets from me when I die? Because her statutory share is 100 percent? That seems to contradict everything else I ever read on this matter. If your wife receives an amount which is...

Re: Entering semi-retirement - what now?
Coming back to this thread regarding HC. My wife still works at the company I left and was wondering if she should add me to her insurance. Would we expect the cost for this to be less than N+1? She will go ask HR. Meanwhile I'm filling out the Hello Work documentation. I think they are just going ...

Re: Entering semi-retirement - what now?
I'd say you should still do the math, or visit the city hall and ask for estimates. As maybe your salary puts you in the highest bracket anyway for national insurance, even with the 30/100 applied. The last time I was unemployed and used this, my salary was around JPY 9M, so setting it to 30/100 for...

Re: Entering semi-retirement - what now?
It's worth doing the math and checking with your city hall how much it would cost once they take into account the 30/100 calculation. There are some links here and there should be some on your city's/district's website. https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/houdou/2r98520000004o7v.html For me it was quite a s...

Re: Redundancy - Anyone gone through the process in Japan?
Happened to me 4 times in the last 5 companies I worked for in the past 17 years (it wasn’t me, just bad luck, I swear ^^; ) so i know about this subject. In short, if you’re a full time employee and have done nothing wrong, basically they can’t do much. With that said, if a company really wants to ...

Re: Entering semi-retirement - what now?
If you agreed with your employer to make it so it was their decision, rather than you leaving, and you register to hello work for unemployment benefits, you can then bring the paper they give you to the city hall in order to get the health insurance down to 30/100 for about a year. I’ve used this tw...

Re: Questions on tokutei and FX-related gains in the tax declaration
@sterk May I ask if you found a definitive answer about your point #1? I will be in the same situation, as I sold some, paid the capital gain tax due, and received the USDs in Japan. Now I'm not sure what to do... Invest the bulk into something like VT in USD, convert everything to JPY and invest in...
