Re: Renaming RetireJapan

I think this name fits perfectly. I was really excited to see that there was so much content exactly about my concerns at the time. If it were a name that suggested finance/saving in Japan, I don't think I would have joined. One thing I love about this website, the forum and the youtube channel is t...

Re: Any Crowd Bank experiences

This isn't savings. The risk profile of a savings account and this is vastly different. It's basically a bond except they don't go through the hassle of actually issuing bonds and actually getting rated. You're giving them a loan for the return they're promising you. Yes, it is certainly not a savi...

Re: Any Crowd Bank experiences

Looks good if you are interested in concentrated risk. I try to avoid things that look like 'get rich quick schemes'. I have not bought crypto for the same reason. Of course some people will probably make lots of money from these kind of investments/gambles. Good luck to them! Thanks for the reply!...

Re: Advice on home purchase + retirement savings

It costs more than renting, but your are building an asset that can be kept in the future. In that way, is it still a financial drain? Well, when we bought my property and got the keys to the door, the very next day we had the old house (maybe 40 years old?) immediately bulldozed! I hope that the n...

Re: Advice on home purchase + retirement savings

There is a tax break (loophole?) where you get a 1% break on your home loan principal. The loan has to be for personal use and this deduction is only valid for 10 years (was 13 years during covid). Your friend probably thinks getting this tax break then selling the house and getting a new loan is a...

Re: Advice on home purchase + retirement savings

Many questions: 1. Do you intend to stay in Japan? 2. Do you intend to stay in Tokyo? 3. You state you don't know if/when you will get married or have a family 4. If you stay long term, where would you like to live? 5. How much are you currently paying for rent? Thank you for the detailed answer! I...

Any Crowd Bank experiences

I did a search on the forums but I didn't catch anything on this topic, but I'm sure people here will know about it. Have any of you used CrowdBank (https://crowdbank.jp/) Would you recommend it as a trustworthy investment platform/ place to keep savings for some returns. They have a lot of options ...

Re: Advice on home purchase + retirement savings

The reality, of course, is that everyone is going to do the best that they can with their situation. The more we think about it and prepare, the better (up to a point, we need to enjoy life now as well as get ready for the future). Some people will have to work longer, some will have cut back on th...

Re: Advice on home purchase + retirement savings

The famous ¥20million example assumes you get a retirement income of approximately ¥230,000 monthly from contributions paid into the kosei nenkin and kokumin nenkin systems over 40 years. Is that your situation? I will have by age 65. So, at least there's that. From personal experience I can say th...

Re: Advice on home purchase + retirement savings

From what I saw, the super low interest rate was because of a huge downpayment. If it was a full loan, what are the interest rates you would expect? It will ultimately depend on the bank, but it is common to borrow 100% or more of the home price. I got a 110% mortgage (to cover fees) at 0.5% floati...
