Re: Free uni fees (3 kids) ?

It's better than most things they've tried before, I think, and we as a family will certainly be grateful for it, should it be implemented in the end. (I can understand how people with fewer than three children feel, not too mention people who are still paying off "scholarship" loans, and ...

Big news for Tokyo families with high school students?

Was rather surprised to read this article today. It's a bit sparse on the deatils at this point, but hopeful.

Certainly a positive development and something to keep an eye on.

Re: Late start, portfolio allocation

Thank you very much for the reply. My biggest worry has been, am I wrong to ignore the "100 minus your age" blanket thinking about equities vs. bond allocation and the common advice of "you need more in bonds due to your age." My personal feeling has been, as long as I'm working,...

Late start, portfolio allocation

I've still got 10 years of runway before retirement, but I've started to shift my retirement portfolio allocation slightly over the last few years. I'm aware of a lot of the mainstream thoughts about portfolio allocation, but this is the current situation. We've got a three-month emergency fund in c...

New Tokyo Metropolitan Private School Foundation Subsidy for JHS students

I've heard whispers of a subsidy for children enrolled in Tokyo private junior high schools for quite a while now, but applications have finally started from 1 September. If you have a child enrolled in a private junior high school in Tokyo and meet the household income threshold (which doesn't seem...

Re: Canadians - Receiving OAS after citizenship change

Contributions are only required to receive CPP. OAS is paid to all Canadian citizens and legal residents regardless of whether they worked and contributed anything. They only other requirement is having lived in Canada for 10 years or 20 years after age 18 depending on where you reside when your app...

Re: Canadians - Receiving OAS after citizenship change

My understanding is that Japanese citizens are allowed to pay kokumin nenkin on a voluntary basis while living abroad. https://www.city.edogawa.tokyo.jp/e030/qa/kurashi/nenkin/nenkin14.html Yes, that's correct. She has never not been covered by Japanese pension. She made no contributions to Canada ...

Re: Canadians - Receiving OAS after citizenship change

Follow up question, if anyone knows. My wife is a Canadian permanent resident status holder. But as most Japanese living abroad for extended periods of time, she maintained her enrollment in Japan's National Pension system for the entire time we lived in Canada. Based on this paragraph from the tax ...

Thanks very much. Pretty much what I was hoping to hear.

Canadians - Receiving OAS after citizenship change

I'm wondering if any former Canadian citizens (who have become Japanese before turning 65) are currently receiving OAS.

The Service Canada website is a little vague about it, and before contacting them directly for clarification, I thought might ask about it here.
