Re: 2024 JP Tax forecast negotiable?
I am definitely in learning mode and didn't realize that the residence taxes were retroactive based on the previous year. Those retirewiki pages were very helpful. I guess I need to wait and see what my Yotei Nouzei 予定納税 is and then decide if I want to follow-up with the appeal process you posted. t...

Re: 2024 JP Tax forecast negotiable?
Thank you for responding. Well it's very possible I don't yet understand the process as I have only been a tax resident for one tax season, 2022 and just submitted my 2023 taxes last month. It is the national tax I am concerned about. Last year I had capital gains as well and I got a letter with 4 p...

2024 JP Tax forecast negotiable?
I am a JP tax resident and sold a big chunk of long-held US stocks in 2023 and paid a capital gains on them to Japan on my 2023 return. I am concerned that my tax 2024 forecast for Japan will be quite inflated this year. I am not expecting to have any big gains like that this year. Is it worth makin...

Re: So who's actually retired in Japan?
I recently did a Tokyo project related to Japanese eldercare facilities. I visited a facility and found it to be very similar to ones my parents had lived in the US. There are a range of facility types and care levels. One difference is that Japanese stay independent probably longer than in the US a...

Quicken or Mint like software in JP?
I would love to do an analysis of my monthly spending. My bank only offers a very rudimentary view of my transactions with no coding of vendor categories etc. So my current process is exporting my transactions and then manually coding them in Google Sheets. Is there a Japanese equivalent to Quicken ...

Re: Online bank security
Yes the banks seem to secure the transaction better than the account access. I have an account with a bank I will not name, that if you know my branch and account number the only thing standing in your way of accessing my account is a four digit pin. it's shocking. However you have to use a mobile a...

Re: Washing Machine with Dryer
I am on my seventh year with a Hitachi Big Drum and am very happy. You do have to clean the lint out of the floor drain after running the cleaning cycle. The machine did get clogged up with lint once and we had to have ~8000 yen service call. Oh and It's not very fast, 3-4 hours per load. We probabl...
