Re: Family loan (USD) repayment. Taxes?

I would not try to split up the transactions into multiple chunks. This could raise all kinds of red flags for money laundering etc. Transferring the money to your Canadian bank account first is a good idea though. Then you can bring it to Japan and if asked simply explain the truth, it is a transf...

Re: Family loan (USD) repayment. Taxes?

Good points and advice from both @beanhead and @captainspoke. Yes, there was no agreement/contract... kind of wish I had made one... will do next time. Since the transfer was done from my Canadian bank account to their US bank account, could I avoid complications by having them transfer the funds ba...

Family loan (USD) repayment. Taxes?

Hello, I had loaned a family-member a sum of money about 5-years ago and they are preparing to return the sum back to me. I am wondering if there may be tax implications on this. I will describe the situation below. About 5-years ago, I loaned $10,000 USD to a family member. This was converted from ...

Re: Is monthly purchase mandatory in tsumitate part of NISA?

Japanese get two bonuses a year, but you can add a bonus contribution any time you like, subject to the following limit... What's the source for the Japanese/non-Japanese difference? I don't believe NISA cares about nationality. I think Tkydon meant that, in Japan, salaried workers (usually) get 2 ...

Hmm, could be. Maybe I am just turning into a suspicious-of-everything oyaji.

Ah, okay, I will do more poking around and see if the rules are different for a GK.

Thanks very much!

Re: Not Japanese, no entry

Hmm... I understand the feeling about being profiled, then denied something that is expected to be open to all people... but this situation reminds me of a strange thing I observed several months ago. I live in an area of Tokyo where it is not known to be popular to tourists (hooray). There is nothi...

Re: Bank recommendations for small business (GK)

Wise for transfers into a USD virtual account and Stripe for CC payments is smooth and worry-free. I only do Wise at the moment but if a client was determined to pay by CC, I'd use CC. I don't mind paying a little extra (and it's really not much) for Wise because of how easy it is for everyone. @Yo...

Re: Taxable investment withdrawals: FIFO?

Yes, that is what I think. I have no idea of your Tax Basis for the Units you already hold, but that will be inherited by the new units if you buy more of the same units. As you specifically stated you want to make a short-term investment, in and out, I think it would be better to not mix that sum ...
