Re: So who's actually retired in Japan?
Really interesting discussion with some thoughtful and honest contributions. I remember joking with a former colleague a few years ago (fellow Brit) that if we become 'lifers' in Japan, we should go into business setting up an old folk's home for English speakers, with us as the Board and then later...

Thanks @Stuart and @kyno-office
The HRMC website is a useful resource for sure.
But I still can't find a simple summary of inheritance tax for Brits abroad.

Re: Non-UK domicile
Thanks @adamu and @kuma - this wiki is useful. Started to read that treaty (from article 26) and gave up! It's dense and legal (obviously). It basically looks as though the treaty is set up to help avoid double taxation and that does include inheritance tax. Beyond that though, I still need a simple...

Re: Non-UK domicile
I'm from the UK. PR in Japan. Half my assets are in the UK, half in Japan. I'm spent some time browing to learn more about what the inheritance tax would be when I die (where the assets would be taxed, whether there's be double taxation, etc.) I know the (Japan) laws have changed a couple times in r...

Re: Unemployment insurance question (Hello Work)
Thanks @adamu!
Wondering if there’s a private insurance option too. But agree that having my own savings is key to being secure in this situation.

Unemployment insurance question (Hello Work)
I have been offered a job contract with a Vietnamese company with no office in Japan. I'll remain in Japan for the duration of the contract, paying myself into kokumin nenkin, kokumin kenkou hoken. I understand that I'll be considered a freelancer by Japanese authorities (kojin jigyou nushi). 1) Is ...

Re: Very confused
Thanks jcc and fools_gold for the responses. Following your advice on navigating the Rakuten site, I've been able to check the fees and these are minimal. I haven't made any sales yet. I can't explain the deficit noted in my OP. There appeared to be an unaccounted 100,000 円 yesterday. But checking t...

Very confused
Hi All, I'm brand new to investing. Opened an online account and deposited 8m yen. Bought a range of products over the last 2-3 months, trying to create a balanced portfolio and following different bits of advice I've picked up. Anyway, I can't really understand the statement which I'll share with y...
