Re: Where/ when / how to submit a tax declaration?
Many thanks to Retirejapan and sutebayashi, Apologies for the slight delay in responding, but I have been able to verify that no tax declaration is required - which is obviously a very nice feature of such a tokutei account. In case it might help, for those of you who are interested in checking your...

Where/ when / how to submit a tax declaration?
Dear All, A bit of a dummy's question, but with the end of the financial year approaching, how does one go about submitting a tax declaration? I sold some stocks/funds this year, making a few hundred man yen in profit (capital gains?). All of these stocks were held in tokutei accounts (Rakuten and M...

Re: To rollover, or not to rollover ... that is the question
You don't have to roll over everything. So roll over the overseas equity funds with the best returns, but not the bond funds or that Japanese fund. Then buy new overseas equity funds with the remaining 370,000 yen to make up 1.2M (?) Many thanks for the reply, and apologies for the slight delay in ...

To rollover, or not to rollover ... that is the question
Dear All, I am just considering whether to rollover a regular NISA at the end of this year. This was a first ever NISA, so I played it perhaps a little too safely with a high proportion of bonds. I have done a few basic calculations (presented below) which suggest that it would be better not to roll...

Re: National Insurance: Neglecting payments and how to turn it around
I have a follow-up question. This is not going to sound too bright, but I am having trouble remembering/tracking down who I worked for just before I came out to Japan. I am pretty sure it was work that I had through an agency rather than a direct employment, but now I am not sure how to find their ...

Re: Leaving Japan - General Guide
Many thanks - this is a great idea for an article, since a significant proportion of foreigners in Japan do leave Japan, either forever or for some time. 10-- Exit Tax Basically if you have more than Y100M in assets, then you would have to mark to market and pay Capital Gains Tax on the paper gain.....

Re: Could I afford to NOT retire in Japan?
Mulling over a blog post at the moment, but recently I have been thinking about how reasonable the cost of living can be in Japan (at least for our situation here in Sendai, owning or mostly owning our home). Right now I am pretty confident about our ability to retire here and live off pensions and...

Re: Negotiating with landlord when asked to leave
If you have a direct line of communication with the owners then you could maybe ask them politely if they would consider giving you your full deposit back if you cleaned it reasonably thoroughly yourself on leaving, that is about as far as I would think about asking them (since they are moving back ...

Re: Mac
Just such a waist as we all know there is some value in it. Aluminum cases and precious metals etc. Presuming that it is an intel CPU Mac, then the simplest thing to do is to install linux and use it as a linux machine. That way you can avoid the waste problem. Linux is free software and is somewha...

Re: Two factor authentification on overseas accounts
This reply is a little late but in case you are still interested. As some of the other people have replied, the two factor authentication is generally a bit of a pain, and if there is an alternative available you can investigate that. But there is sometimes not an alternative available. I don't have...
