Re: Cryptocurrencies

Does anyone understand how someone can transfer money from Japanese BitCoin (like Bitflyer) to another exchange in the USA or EU? I cannot seem to find useful information on reddit or google. The problem with bitcoin is that unlike funds in a bank or brokerage you are 100% responsible for its secur...

Re: Welcome to the RetireJapan forum

Have you considered settting up a redirect for the time being from https://www.retirejapan.com/ to https://www.retirejapan.com/forum/index.php or the .info homepage? I keep going to the .com instead of .info version by mistake, and ending up at the placeholder page. It'll probably also help your goo...

Re: Better solution than bank savings account for cash storage?

Not what you asked for, but sticking with savings accounts, Shinsei does a 0.05% (better than 0.01%...) account: 2weeks Maturity Deposit http://sre.shinseibank.com/InterestrateC/rate_list_en.aspx#cate4 One downside with this is that you have to close it to withdraw any money - so may not be suited t...

Re: Cryptocurrencies

My thinking here is that this is an asset that cost me almost nothing to acquire and is gaining value very quickly. There is no scenario where this could result in a loss. On the other hand, buying this asset for 700,000JPY would make me enter a scenario where the loss could be this very sum. By ho...

Re: Cryptocurrencies

Being a need, I had mined a bit (about 1 bitcoin) when it was still doable for individuals. Keeping it just in case it goes over 1 million, but not hoping too much. :) If I gave you 700,000 yen now, and you had no bitcoin, would you buy bitcoin with it? Probably not. Therefore you should probably s...

Re: Cryptocurrencies

I'll confess. This is my Apple share story. Back in 2011 (I think) I bought around 50 Bitcoin. Then the price rose from $2 to $10 so I sold most of them. Now the price is around $5700. If I had held onto them, I'd have $285,000 now from my initial investment of about $150. So... yeah. That being sai...

Re: Car Share vs Ownership

As a Times carshare member, you get discounted rates and simplified procedure for the normal rental service too, and you can pick up the car any time after 5pm the day before for no extra cost. They also have frequent campaigns. I usually pay about 3-4k + fuel for 24 hours for a basic car like a Maz...

This is true, but only inside a NISA. Any other account and they charge as normal.

Re: Rakuten Vanguard ETF Funds

If they reinvest the dividends that would be awesome. Currently reinvesting manually at the moment. I also buy Vanguard's bond ETFs, so I'll probably just stick to my current way for the time being. If I find the time to find a Japan-based (but international) bond fund that seems as good as BND / BN...
