What is this Awful PFIC rule? I'm an American who just opened a new nisa account with SBI (took forever). I purchased a bunch of the UFJ eMaxis series, but just noticed this thread about Americans being required to file lenghty and complicated PFIC tax forms. Is this something an online tax service...

Purchase price converted at the GBP:¥ rate on the buy date; sale price converted the same way at the different rate for the sell date.

The purpose of the rules is for Japanese, so that people don't just leave Japan to get an inheritance out of the way, and then (probably) come back. Foreigners just happen to be caught up in it, too.
