Re: Buying a car by financing it from overseas account by wire transfer
Another thing, not sure if it's been mentioned in thread so far but double taxation agreement between Japan and USA should minimise your tax exposure here if you go down this route

Re: Buying a car by financing it from overseas account by wire transfer
Where have you heard that the NTA will assume any money you send in 2024 comes from 2024 income? Not from anything on this thread unless I have missed it. In the example you quote where the income is made in 2023 but sent in 2024, there would be no Japanese tax due in your situation. However any ove...

Re: Buying a car by financing it from overseas account by wire transfer
Understood, it makes sense as I have also heard and went to our local tax accountant/office about these matters. The tax on overseas income within 5 years that is remitted to Japan makes total sense. What doesn't is that the NTA assumes. It's quite simple. If you have no overseas income and bring s...

Re: Advice: Keep investing on Nisa or not
A target date fund aimed at 2030 (assuming they exist for such a short time frame) might take the legwork out of it for you. Such funds will automatically shift asset allocation towards less risk as the target date approaches. Though a DIY approach would likely work out cheaper in terms of managemen...

Not that I am aware of. They do offer interest of varying amounts on the currencies they support. Just click on the relevant currency in the link: https://moneykit.net/en/guide/fc/ Be aware that, unlike yen deposits, cash held in foreign currency is not protected up to 10m yen in case of bank failure.

Re: UK houses and capital gains tax
Is it possible for the estate to sell the house in order to pay UK taxes and costs? If so you might avoid the Japan capital gains tax issue altogether as you just receive net cash from the inheritance. An interesting suggestion. I suspect the inheritance valuation tax date (for want of a better exp...

Re: Transferring UK Inheritance to Japan - I'm clueless!
Funds arrived in my account with no fuss. They just asked the purpose of the transfer to which I answered truthfully "inheritance". I was also asked to register my MyNumber with SonyBank urgently...which I have not yet done, as I was able to access the funds without doing so. Pleased also...

or provide proof of past residency Ruh-roh. What is the bet that I am unable to do this (don't have a British driving license any more, as you're not allowed to renew them as a non-resident  ) Correspondence related to your UK pension payments should be fine. Don't think address will matter, ...

Re: Transferring UK Inheritance to Japan - I'm clueless!
I'm actually in mid-process. Funds have arrived at my bank (Sony Bank - an account which I opened for the purpose of receiving the funds in the original currency rather than let the banks exchange at an unfavourable rate), I today stated the source as "inheritance", and now waiting to see...
