Re: Is this a bad idea?

The dividends look enticing but if you look at the overall return it's not great (8.75% in the past 5 years), especially if you're not reinvesting your dividends. Take a look at this chart for a longer term picture. Also, I'm not sure if the graph subtracts the running costs and taxes. Probably not....

Re: Tsumitate NISA

I think it's the best option if you only want to invest 400,000 yen a year, as your investments are in there for 20 years. Not 5 as with the old version. There's a much higher probability that you will have made some decent gains when your investment gets rolled over into a taxable account. With the...

Re: Dividend yielding investments

If you can read Japanese the screening tool in SBI is pretty helpful. You may have to create an account to use it though.

Nikkei 225 or TOPIX

In your opinion which is the better investment choice? I've read that over time all-market indexes such as TOPIX slightly outperform indexes with less stocks, such as the Nikkei 225 or S&P500 etc. This makes sense I guess, because you have greater diversification. TOPIX ETFs also seem to have lo...

Re: Credit card applications

If you can go without credit, have you considered a debit card? I got a VISA debit card through SBI when I opened my account. Very straight forward (I'm assuming you can read Japanese), and they have a points/cashback system which seems pretty good.

Some questions

Hi, here's a few questions I've been pondering. Many thanks in advance! :) 1. My wife is a company employee and we are in the process of setting up an iDeco for her. From what I can tell in the documentation, her employer will make payments for her. Am I right in assuming that this means her income ...

Re: RetireJapan Guides

Hi, firstly thanks so much for offering all this helpful material!

An insurance guide would be helpful for me. Japanese seem to love insurance (安心安全!), but a lot of it seems like poor value, particularly the savings type ones that payout once you reach a certain age.

Re: 750,000¥ remaining in 2017 NISA allowance - how to best use?

I'm still new to this too, but I'll add my thoughts :) When you're starting out it can be tempting to try and time the market. And this has its place if you're looking at individual stocks and have done your research. But for something like a world stock index (or any stock for that matter), for sig...
