Re: House maintenance

Our house was packed in scaffolding for the re-painting of the roof a few years ago (maybe 20 years after original purchase). I think the cost breakdown for the project showed that putting up and removing the scaffolding was a little more expensive than the actual painting and I don't think any of t...

Re: Rare case inheritance question

One other thing that I learned from PlanVision is that income earned in Japan is stacked on top of any IRA distributions in the US for the purpose of calculating total income. For example, assuming one earned the equivalent of $60k in Japan and took a distribution of $40k from the Inh. IRA that yea...

Re: ONE MILLION YEN IN CASH ON THE TABLE

It did not work that way for us. We all sat in a room but the transfer first of the mortgage money to my bank account then to the seller was all electronic. It would have been a large stack of ichiman notes otherwise.

Re: WHAT AND HOW DID YOU PAY FOR YOUR DETACHED HOUSE?

We paid 144 million for a new 140 sq meter three story house on 37 tsubo (122 sq meters) land in the middle of Tokyo in late 2001. The bank would not give us a mortgage without a guarantee from my employer (actually, banks would not even seriously talk to us and the workaround was to ask my employer...

Re: New Emaxis India fund: eMAXIS インド株式インデックス

That fund is based on the "Nifty 50" index which is a free-float market-cap (meaning the market capitalization actually available for trading) index of the 50 largest listed companies on the NSE. The name of the index is ironic for those of us who remember the nifty 50 as a cautionary tale...

Re: Monthly Dividend Paying funds - Searching

As an option to all other possibilities. I'm not planning to invest solely in Dividend Paying, but would like to be able to search for these more easily than currently (at least) I can do on Rakuten/Yahoo/Monex. I'm also keen to perhaps be in a position to maybe retire from day-day work come age 55...

Re: Rethinking emergency funds

Like @adamu I find that emergency fund to be a great psychological boost to staying invested during downturns and keeping my asset allocations aggressive (meaning lots of equity index funds instead of bonds). It has definitely cost me money because our interest rates are so low in Japan but I am hap...

Re: (Early) Retirement gigs

Congratulations! You should do something involving writing, as you are very good at it. I agree! I am hoping that retirement frees up Moneymatters to write more. The world keeps presenting us with plenty of the bizzare in finance among other things and it would be great to see someone do justice to...
