Re: Detached House in Tokyo - Does and Don'ts

So after getting back from a trip to Kyoto I have a couple of questions / observations about detached houses in that part of Japan (and other old cities?) that don't really warrant a new thread. 1. Almost all the houses are detached, with a VERY NARROW gap in between them. ... 2. The parking spaces...

Re: Spousal secret stash

What’s the opposite of a stash? Decades ago, when not smoothing out the numbers on a family credit card, my partner in grime revealed they had also built up a frankly impressive amount of debt on their personal credit card. (Like. If I gave you the money in cash you’d feel uncomfortable walking arou...

Prestia ATM fee policy change from Oct 2023

In Oct 2023 Prestia made a change to their ATM fee policy. Basically, keeping over 1mil yen account balance no longer gets you free ATM usage at places like 7-11 anymore. You can use an ATM for free by using an SMBC ATM whenever they might be available, for free use, to their banking customers. (So ...

Re: House maintenance

Some intelligent discuss (and me) in these linked threads. The age, maintenance to date and Materials of your house will have most bearing. https://www.retirejapan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2742 https://www.retirejapan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1703 To answer your question, what you are seeing is ba...

Re: Trading account options as a non-resident

Given all the stories about new people to japan not being to open even a bank account* until they're been here for six months, I very much doubt this is possible. They would want your residence card and My Number, too (and probably images of the front and back of both). … https://money-career.com/a...

Re: NISA General Questions | SBI

Are you sure the 100 shares are actually in your New NISA account? Doesn't seem like it from the screenshot. Yeah, good question! I'm pretty sure I selected NISA when I bought it, and it shows up under the NISA section of my portfolio. The order history for this transaction appears to be NISA: … Ma...

Re: Detached House in Tokyo - Does and Don'ts

Nice area. A friend lives near. As explained to me, the land is strong and at decent elevation, but as you know flood risk can be very localized. I will say though. Some of those roads are the reason hand cart fire trucks are still an actual thing in Tokyo. If that's a consideration for you. Althoug...

Re: March net worth update

I would say that budgeting matches weight maintenance more closely. Investing might more closely match weight training or bodybuilding. Self-control, delayed satisfaction, gradual progress, and long-term commitment. Or "revenge". Which in my humble opinion gets painted in an unfair light....

Re: (Early) Retirement gigs

... I think social connections are a good reason to keep working, but as most of my work-related connections are with kids between 6 and 18 years old, I am not sure that really applies to me! My wife's main concern is what I will write on any forms that require me to fill in profession. I don't thi...

Re: NISA with JA Bank - any feedback or advice ?

… JA charge as whopping JPY 770 to transfer over JPY 20,000 to another bank, so I assume it would be the same to transfer to a broker. And since it would be on a monthly basis, it would quite defeat the purpose... They partner with "saison" and offer a "whole world" (all countri...
