Re: Non US Citizen living in Japan and investing on USA
Obligatory disclaimer that I am not a tax professional, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. Appreciate if others correct me when I'm saying something wrong. Do you know where I can find more detail on how exactly to file taxes for the dividends earned in a US brokerage? I read somewhere o...

Re: Non US Citizen living in Japan and investing on USA
To answer your initial question: as a non US citizen living in Japan and investing with a US broker (this is my case, French citizen). - The US broker withholds 10% of your dividends as a "Non Resident Alien" tax. In some cases you can claim that tax as a foreign credit for your taxes in J...

Re: Capital gain tax vs Income tax
But can I claim trading to be my job (or one of)? Income taxes in Japan start from 10%. Can I just pay those 10% then (assuming profit is not huge, so it stays within that 10% earnings limits)? I highly doubt that just because you claim your job is trader, that it means instantly your capital gains...

Re: Advice: must leave full time employment, anything to be aware of?
There has been power harassment of various kinds and some bullying too, and I'm suffering stress and depression. I'm not interested in taking antidepressants, which I think would be required in order to receive 傷病手当. Could be wrong. I would still look into trying to get it categorized as a health-r...

Re: US Checking Account with Foreign Address?
I have an account with First Tech Fed, with my Japanese address. But it was opened when I was in the US, so not sure if they would be ok to open an account for someone who's not currently in the US.

I personally like ERN's take on it, for those willing to read (a lot) he has a full collection of close to 50 articles that detail everything you possibly want to know about the safe withdrawal rate. Some of his articles also include data-driven debunks of some "hand wavy" arguments of the...

I'm not sure, for example, around how much of my gross income should the mortgage payments be. From a personal finance perspective, the smaller your mortgage payment is, the better (it gives you more flexibility). Mine is a bit extreme in that it is around 3% of our income and our only debt. I woul...

Re: Self-renovation
We would be cash buyers which I read somewhere would negate some tax benefits not having a mortgage? If you take a mortgage on a recent house (new or less than X year old) there is a significant tax deduction of up to 500'000 yen per year for ten years (limited to 1% of the remaining mortgage per y...

Re: what happens when you leave?
I wonder how much trouble it would be to transfer a sizeable amount of money across countries. I think the main issue would be the tax implications, rather than the transfer itself. If you have to sell a significant amount of stock/ETF (in this case, all of it) before transferring it, you're liable...

Re: Disney World of English
We used Disney World of English for a couple years on our first kid. My wife got pressured into buying it, although you can buy it used for significantly less which is what she did. We got a version from the 90's with hilariously outdated clothes on all actors. My two cents: huge waste of money. Thi...
