Re: Avoid Taxes by Investing from Singapore?

This obviously would differ by company, but I know that mine would offset (i.e. pay) any increase in the tax burden that results from accepting an expat assignment overseas. I'd love to entertain this for the sake of discussion: We're talking of someone who owns more than $1 million dollars in taxa...

Re: basic book to read on money/world markets

But I have a chunk of money that is basically sitting in the Japanese Bank making me zero money. I want to invest it, but am still nervous about committing a larger sum, and making a terrible, no-retirement-for-you-until-you're-90 type mistake. Probably nothing new in that, money is scary business:...

Re: Paying tax in Japan on a UK rental property?

On those f/x conversions: I have worked with a global tax audit company for my taxes for 3 years, and their decision seemed to vastly depend on the person I was dealing with, the regularity of the income (per opposition to "one shot" incomes) as well as the amount involved. In my experienc...

Re: Avoid Taxes by Investing from Singapore?

Thinking about it now, that wouldn't have made much sense since, as you say, just having the assets isn't a taxable event. Some countries have a tax on wealth though ;) Also Japan probably keeps track of this for the exit tax: just having the assets isn't a taxable event, but having the assets AND ...

Re: Paying tax in Japan on a UK rental property?

couldn't get a yes or no. To which question? Looking back at your questions in the original post, here's how it goes: Do I need to pay taxes here on this? --> Basically yes: If you've lived in Japan more than 5 years out of the past 10 years, you are considered a resident permanent for tax purposes...

Re: Corona subsidy (free money)

How do we fix the economy so that living frugally doesn't kill it? So that we can buy things for life and take care of them, and then enjoy the free time we all get from having to work less to produce things that are destined to be thrown out? I think a lot of people who start thinking seriously ab...

Re: Is my NISA account also a brokerage account

Ben pretty much already replied but I wanted to add my 2 cents 1/ Is my above understanding correct and is there anything else I should watch for when investing outside the NISA scope? 2/ Is SBI suitable to be my sole brokerage account? 1) I think your understanding is accurate (Ben already replied)...

Re: Newbie moving to Japan

Either way, I don't think 2 months would be long enough to break residence for tax purposes. Per my experience working with tax consultants (but don't quote me on this), any time in/out of the country is counted down to the day. 2 months might not make a huge difference in the long term, but if you...

Re: Avoid Taxes by Investing from Singapore?

I want to emphasize what Oklah! said because it's something I had a hard time understanding back in the days. TL, DR: - permanent tax resident is not the same as your "permanent resident" status on your visa. The two are uncorrelated. You are considered a permanent tax resident if you have...

Re: Aussie leaving Japan

I have an account with Sompo through my employer. Assuming it's the same thing you have (some sort of J401k), here's what I can tell you: When you leave Japan, your account becomes "frozen", meaning you can't add or remove money from it, until you reach the age at which it is legal from yo...
