Re: Employment post-65

Not the law, but I saw data recently that over 90% of companies/employers in Japan have a mandatory retirement age, at which point employees have to retire. They can then be rehired under different employment conditions ;) This is what happens at our school. Retirement is at 63, with the option of ...

Re: Renewing UK driver's licence and getting a Japanese one

Think I posted his before but can't seem to find it. Anyway, his is what I was told directly by email when tried to renew my UK licence: As you reside in Japan, I regret that we are unable to issue you with a further British licence. Changes to British legislation resulting in the implementation of...

Re: Renewing UK driver's licence and getting a Japanese one

I think you should be ok. I converted my UK paper licence to a photo one while living in Japan no problem and had my mother send it over to me. However, whenever I go back to the UK I always take an international licence issued in Japan because technically my UK licence is invalid. The problem is if...

Re: Investment Timing and Account Allocations?

You cannot make generalizations about currency risk, but must look at it in terms of specific currency pairs. A 50 year timeframe is not short when it comes to back-testing. Policies come and go. There are always periods of volatility. Passive investors are not too worried by this. I was a bit conf...

Re: Investment Timing and Account Allocations?

What might be right for USD investors in America is not the same for YEN investors in Japan. Americans with their access to Ibonds, and other TreasuryDirect products have so many fantastic options. Firstly, Vanguard's foreign bond offerings in Japan (through Rakuten) are also currency hedged. Secon...

Re: Investment Timing and Account Allocations?

I am not arguing for a direct benefit, but a wash effect. That positive currency risk and negative currency risk will mostly balance out over time. And that the fees for hedged products might leave you in a worse position than being long-term unhedged. So, are you saying that the overall net effect...

Re: UK State Pension newbie

Well, it didn't. For months. Then I called them and they said something like 'oh, we received your payment but we didn't know what it was for so we haven't done anything with it' So I would recommend letting them know what it is. Thanks. I gave them a call yesterday. The confirmed the money ...

Re: Investment Timing and Account Allocations?

I am just looking for a polite discussion, that is it. This is not an argument or confrontation. So am I. I would welcome a discussion about this. Apologies if I seem overly aggressive. I have not seen any significant data that makes a strong argument for Japanese investors structuring their invest...

Re: UK State Pension newbie

I can't answer your question about the gateway site, but regarding the payments showing up, patience is needed. I think they say the normal turnaround time is 12 or 16 weeks... After that, then call to check up. Well, it took about 5 months to get my initial application processed. I just hope the p...

Re: UK State Pension newbie

When I backpaid they applied the payment to my account but didn't do anything with it. I had to call them up and tell them what it was for, and only at that point did the payments show up on my record. Sending them a letter or calling just after you make the payment is probably a good idea. How did...
