Re: Reduce the grocery bill
I didn't think it was worth starting a new thread over, but our local supermarket is selling butter at 200 yen for a 200g pack. That's half the usual price. I think it may be related to the recent news about a milk glut. Anyway, if you like butter now might be a good time to stock up :) +1 for the f...

Re: Investment Timing and Account Allocations?
This is a topic I am interested in, so forgive me if I seem argumentative. Why do I get the feeling we've been over this before? I agree with your point, which is why I think it is important to stick to market weight allocations. Then why allocate 5% to advanced market REITS? What's your rationale ...

Re: Investment Timing and Account Allocations?
I agree with everything you said generally, but when it comes to J-Reits it is worth pointing out this is a 2500% overweight compared to the index. As op seems to be mostly investing in passive, market-cap-weighted indexes this is worth pointing out. Here is the data from FTSE (All-Cap is the compe...

Re: Investment Timing and Account Allocations?
#1 I have a long investment horizon (25 years or so), but I am a bit more risk adverse than some I've seen on these forums and I'd like to have a little bit of something to pull from that isn't stocks if I absolutely need to take out of the portfolio beyond my 6-month emergency fund. #2 I am planni...

Re: How does the iDeco annuity works?
Most people opt for the lump sum. There's a big tax break for lump sum retirement payments. On the other hand, the pension will probably be taxed. When you're 65 there is only a 1.1 million yen allowance for pensions. If you have been paying into kosei nenkin as well as kokumin nenkin for a while th...

Re: Best ETFs for Dividend Income
I don't buy ETFs any more, but my wife has some 1478. One thing to bear in mind is that ETFs aren't that popular in Japan. Some of them have low volume and very large bid-ask spreads. I'd avoid these because it's difficult to fill a buy or sell order at your preferred price and there is also a chanc...

Re: Five factor investing with JP mutual funds?
Hello, I've been reading https://www.pwlcapital.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Five-Factor-Investing-with-ETFs.pdf and I was wondering if anybody had worked out allocations of low-cost JP funds (eMaxis etc) to reach the same exposure as the Canada-centric portfolio presented in the paper. I'm think...

Re: Saving for a loan down payment (5 years)
By the way, when applying for a loan the bank considers both our income, or just the income of the person that is applying? Is it possible to make a loan on the name of 2 people? I haven't done it personally, but it is possible. I guess you'd both have to be screened which might make it more diffic...

Re: Saving for a loan down payment (5 years)
I've heard of some people investing their deposit and doing quite well, but the general advice I've seen is to put it in a savings account if you need money in the short term. One option would be to just invest a proportion of the money to reduce the risk. Personally, I chose to max out my loan rath...

Re: EV Charging Port Parking Lot
The plan sounds interesting, but there is quite a capital outlay. The solar charging stations linked to cost $65,000. Also, because they're solar the charging power is limited. I think it takes them about 8-12 hours to charge a car. Something I've not really seen here is covered parking with solar p...
