Moving in Japan: checklist

I might be moving (prefecture) soon and thought I'd draw up a checklist for moving house. I don't have any utility company contracts but probably will in the new place. In order for this to be useful for others, any suggestions that come up I will edit this post to include here. Here's what I've com...

Re: Japanese Loyalty Point, Credit Card, and Mobile

As far as I can see there are two common systems: A store-specific point-card that gets you up to 1% of purchase value in points, which can later be used for cashback. Payment cards that give you points for the system from step 1 as a reward for using that card as opposed to another one (thus earnin...

Re: NISA after 5 years

Further to RetireJapan's point: Once you have the two months invested for this year, then in January, assuming you have the money, you can put more money away for another 5 years. So by not waiting, you're getting more tax protection in total. In fact if money was not a problem, investing 1.2M in No...

Re: NISA after 5 years

Opening a NISA account takes a long time (months!), so you should apply now if you want to start using it in 2018. It doesn't matter if the account is opened early, you can just not buy anything until 2018 and start using your 2018 allowance then. Kiyora, I think having to wait til 2018 could be a g...

Re: English name for 積立NISA

I like Accumulation NISA too. Unlike the normal (現行 / "Current"?) NISA, it's restricted to funds that don't pay out monthly dividends, and have no maturation date. This and the higher allowance and longer term mean it's obviously targeted for small regular deposits to accumulate, as oppose...

Re: Kyushu

I'm planning on attending the event this Saturday, and will also recommend it to some friends and colleages. I can't find any information on the location either here, on Facebook, or on the JALT site. Any chance of putting that info up?

Re: Capital gains tax and income tax

My understanding (and experience) is this: Capital gains tax is paid on the increase in value (capital gain) of your asset. So it becomes payable when you sell something for a profit. If you sell something for a loss, you can use that to offset something you sold for a profit. This is the principle ...

Re: Welcome to the RetireJapan forum

The SSL cert looks good! Although the forum is still accessable without it if you use the http URL instead of https. There should be a way to have http requests redirect to the https version.

Also, it looks like (some?) users, me included, are unable to send private messages. ;)

Re: Welcome to the RetireJapan forum

Hello. :-) Congrats on the new forum. You should probably set up an SSL certificate for this domain, so that connections are encrypted. Currently passwords and login sessions are sent in the clear, which is not very safe (especially if people reuse an existing password for this site). It could also ...
