Re: Selling a flat in the UK
Don't sell it, the Japanese tax office will really go after you especially if you have been reporting it in your yearly tax return with depreciation. Although you probably will be able to subtract the capital gains tax you paid in the UK from anything owed in capital gains in Japan. I'm not plannin...

Re: Voluntary UK pension contribution
Looks like UK state pension is not taxed in the UK for non-residents.
So Japanese income taxes. I'm guessing it would qualify for the nenkin deduction.

Re: Liability insurance
Thanks to both of you for taking the time to reply in detail. I'm really in two minds about it, and my wife - who is usually more risk-averse than me - doesn't think we need it. It might be better to spend that 20,000 yen on accident prevention, such as better lighting in the carpark, or replacing ...

Re: Payment from Singapore to Japan question
After a delay I am now receiving payments from Singapore to my SHINSEI BANK account. Many thanks for the advice here on this Forum. I then tried to transfer some funds from my SHINSEI BANK account to my WISE account. However, during the online process the WISE bank is not an option even though I se...

Re: Using WISE to repatriate USD from Firstrade to Japan?
Unfortunately, when I tried to link the "Wise(US) Checking Account" to my Firstrade account so that it would allow ACH transfers to and from Wise's virtual account, the Firstrade site just would not allow the link, returning a "Profile setup for this bank is not supported" error...

Re: Liability insurance
I wonder if Ben or anyone else can remember what they claimed for in the past. Something on this list or something I haven't thought about? We have about 100 students and I'm still wondering if the cost (20,000 yen?) justifies the risk. Also, student numbers vary and it would be a nightmare if we w...

Re: iDeCo Robo Advisor Portfolio at MONEX...yay or nay?
I think I'll take Ben's advice and look at this ideco as simply one bucket into which I'll put something which has more upside potential (but with mitigated risk) like the eMAXIS Slim 8 asset equally weighted fund. I know everyone here hates it for its huge skew to EM and REITS as well as Japanese ...

Re: what is spousal credit?
The spouse credit is the greater of 160M or the Statutory Spouse Share of the Tax on the Estate, So if for example, there are Statutory Heirs for the Tax Calculation of Spouse and 2 children, the Statutory Shares are 50% for the Spouse Statutory Share and 25% each for the Children's Statutory Share...

Re: what is spousal credit?
As long as it is under 160mneedhelp wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2024 5:55 pm I still don't get it. Does that mean that my wife, my only heir or beneficiary, will not be taxed on any inheritance she gets from me when I die? Because her statutory share is 100 percent? That seems to contradict everything else I ever read on this matter.

Re: Liability insurance
Thank you for all the replies. I will look into it some more. I guess the fact it's cheap means that claims are fairly rare. But just in case... With insurance that often means that the threshold to claim benefits is high. Not my experience with juku hoken (it is easy to claim). But cover is not pa...
