Re: Is two retirement buckets enough
Thanks for asking the question; I read captainspoke's response with interest. I'm not quite retired but I don't think there needs to be a "bond" bucket per se. Personally I have almost no bonds beyond a tiny amount of US I bonds and some use of T bills for cash management to help time my q...

Re: Where to Park USD
Am I over estimating the significance of the exchange rate? For example: $300,000= approx. ¥45,033,600. That’s a 50% profit, if I am calculating that correctly? There is no "profit" on a one-way foreign exchange transaction. When you say there’s no profit, do you mean no taxable profit? I...

Re: Where to Park USD
If you are a US citizen your investment choices are much broader and more attractive in the US. From a Japanese perspective, the tax treatment of foreign (e.g. US) foreign investment accounts is slightly disadvantageous compared to Japanese brokerage accounts but the difference is not large. In addi...

Re: US Taxes and E-Filing w/Non US Spouse
I think even when you file married-filing-separately the US tax return asks for a tax identifying number for the nonfiling spouse. I believe this creates the barrier for e-filing.

Re: Japan taxes and before/after 5 year mark in Japan
Hi.. Thank you for the fast response and info! Do you know if that also includes my 401K accounts in the US? I don't personally have any 401K accounts so I have not had to deal with this myself, but my understanding is that people should declare income when they withdraw from US retirement accounts...

Re: Japan taxes and before/after 5 year mark in Japan
Anyway, since I am currently in the first category...I was wondering how the sale of US stocks or RSUs is taxed in Japan, if at all. Since i am currently in the less than 5 years and not yet a Permanent Resident, if i sell stock or RSUs in the US and that money just stays in my US bank account, doe...

Re: Japanese Credit Cards. What’s in your wallet?
Just one warning about Rakuten. I have the Rakuten Gold Mastercard and had set it as my card for using Uber while in the US on a business trip last week. Rakuten flagged almost every use of the card for Uber as suspicious activity and locked the card. When I called to report that the activity was le...

Re: When selling shares: need to also declare as income?
If that is a "tokutei" account (特定口座) which is deducting the capital gains at the time of sale there is no other reporting you would need to do for Japanese taxes.

Re: US citizen page on RetireJapan
I think it's great that you are helping my fellow US expats. With that in mind I'll try to offer some very picky feedback: "The US requires that all citizens and green card holders submit a US tax return even if they are living abroad." This is not exactly true. The US has the same filing ...
