Re: Ray Dalio's All Weather Portfolio (vs. slowly investing a chunk of money)

What are gold ETFs under NISA? There are a few options - SBI has four or five gold domestic ETFs, including I think the SPDR, than you can purchase under NISA. Also a ton of overseas ETFs available. There are also investment trusts available, they'd be under commodities. Look for コモディティ型; if you sp...

Re: Ray Dalio's All Weather Portfolio (vs. slowly investing a chunk of money)

The eMaxis Slim 8-way balanced fund isn't bad, but it's on the expensive side (0.7% in trust and management fees), and it's a blunt instrument - do you always want to be essentially evenly balanced at 12.5% each in domestic/global/emerging stocks, domestic/global/emerging bonds and domestic/global R...

Re: UK buy to let mortgages

The guy who based his 'arguments' on the Netherlands having a ‘significantly’ higher population than England is back! Possibly reading comprehension isn't your strong suit. I never said the Netherlands had a higher population, I said it was more densely populated. Rather different. Also regarding y...

Re: Bargaining

Thought I'd give an update on the ongoing saga of the lot next door. We noted that the banks we initially spoke to would only give us a regular bank loan of over 3% since we had no plans to live in the house (for the foreseeable future, it's basically going to be a garden for the dog). We then spoke...

Re: Living in A but buying in B

I only have indirect experience with this, but in general, the location of the property itself is irrelevant to your salary etc. Whether you are going to live in the property, however, can have a big impact on whether you're going to be approved for a loan or what interest rate the bank will charge....

Re: Used mansion/Loan advice

Slightly contrarian here, but I'm very concerned that's too much house for your income, particularly with no savings. At the moment it is right up to the 'giri-giri' line with only you working, although it seems like you're both working now? Don't forget, you're also going to have property taxes (7-...

Re: Paying credit debt after leaving Japan?

First, glad to see you are trying to make good on your debt. As long as you are making regular payments on the credit card, I doubt Rakuten will know (or care) that you're no longer in the country. I know many, many people with Japanese bank accounts even after moving overseas - I kept Mizuho and MU...

Re: UK buy to let mortgages

The population density in the UK is the highest in Europe. There isn't enough suitable building land hence the high prices of housing compared to wages. Have you ever even been to the UK? Go drive around nearly any part of London, let alone the UK - you will think many things, 'gee, no room for hou...

Re: Long term care costs

Very sorry to hear that, Stewart. My wife's parents are still quite healthy but are getting on in years (dad is 81, mom is 78), and when my mom passed away last year, we did some researching on the options should something like this happen here in Japan. As noted, most of the places we looked at (介護...
