Child support declaration in Kakutei-Shinkoku

Post by Hiroshi »

Divorced, child under 18yo, paying child allowance to my ex-wife (who's the sole legal parent).
1. Is it possible for me to claim the child allowance amounts and get a tax rebate ?
2. If Yes, do you know of any guide/sample showing how to input in eTax ?

Thanks !

I just googled this and the test is whether the child is still being supported by you AND the mother isn't claiming the child as a dependent on her taxes

https://www.nta.go.jp/law/shitsugi/shotoku/05/65.htm

As for filing, its the same way you would have filed a dependent deduction if you weren't divorced.

As for tax rebate, are you planning on going back to previous years and getting the money refunded or are you just planning on doing it going forward? Going forward, that's a deduction. If you're planning to go back years, you would need to file an amended kakutei shinkoku. I am not sure how far back you can go but I recommend going to the tax office and just asking. They're quite helpful and will even help you write the amended tax form.

Thanks @zeroshiki.
Great information, now I have at least the basic knowledge to talk with the tax office people.
