Yes, I am having an operation next week and the hospital told me they can now apply for this online when you check in (it is not automatic, you still need to request/have them do it).

Big improvement -if it works.

I will report back if I survive the operation :?

What was this? I had an op last month that was 60,000. Was I supposed to have requested something? What did it do exactly?

Can anyone else confirm this?
This is if you are using National Health Insurance - Kokumin Kenko Hoken - AND MyNumberCard as your Health Insurance Card.

It does not apply to other Health Insurance Providers.

Thanks. Good information as always. Doesn’t seem worth the hassle in my case. I think my limit would be 57,000 and my surgery cost was I think 59,000.

Good to know for the future though.

Make sure you keep all receipts for your out-of-pocket expenses for all doctor's visits, treatments, prescription meds, chiropractor visits, rehabilitation, etc., and even over-the-counter meds for self-prescription...

If the total value of your out-of-pocket expenses (not the costs covered by insurance) goes over Y100,000, then you can claim the excess over Y100,000 as a Deduction on your Tax Return - Kakutei Shinkoku - in March next year.
Your Total Taxable Income will be reduced by the excess amount over Y100,000, thereby reducing your tax at the Marginal Tax Rate and Residents' Taxes at 10% on that amount.
