Children with US citizenship

Post by RetireJapan »

Are children with US citizenship expected to file tax returns? If they had a junior NISA account, for example?

I believe there is no difference in tax treatment of US citizens regardless of their age.

I found this page: https://www.irs.gov/publications/p929#e ... 1000203737

Seems like parents can list the child on the parent's tax return in some cases. Otherwise if the child has more than $1,050 of unearned (dividends, for example) income they have to file.

I really really hate the US tax rules. Seems like NISA isn't much of an option for US citizens either :(
