Probably a tired answer, but I found The Bogleheads Guide to Investing a good, easy read. There were parts I skimmed over as I'm not American, but overall it seemed like good sound advice.

Thanks Tony! Their forum is also pretty good, especially for US citizens: https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/index.php

You can search for 'Japan' to get locally interesting stuff :)

My main reference for learning is Investopedia. Tons of material there.

I used to be pretty diligent in reading their Term of the Day, since not understanding the lingo has always felt like an enormous barrier.

I haven't been so diligent recently though... I need to study a variety of other stuff besides investing and am a bit overwhelmed right now.

How much of the book (and the forum) applies for those of us living abroad? I can't imagine the headache of having to declare French income on my JP taxes.

It depends! They speak about a lot of things regarding investment, including the performance of international companies.
I read the book and read the forum everyday to get ideas of investments in stocks, bonds, REITS etc^^
When I'll have a better vision of my objectives I'll also show them my example of ideal portfolio so that they help me adjust it according to my objectives.
The forum is very impressive with a lot of qualitative comments!

Those who are able to read Japanese might be interested in reading a book called Hisan Unyo written by Takunori Hashimoto. It gives a decent overview of the state of investing in Japan. In Japanese: 捨てられる銀行2 非産運用 by 橋本卓典.
