Who needs new passport details?

Post by Gareth »

Hi all

I recently renewed my British passport. I have been asked for a copy of the photo page from the company I work for as a contractor but not an employee.

Am I actually legally required to give this to the company? I have PR and am not sponsored by the company. Are they legally required to have this info? Why isn’t a Residence Card enough?

This has really got me thinking. Does anyone else need the info? As far as I can tell, things like iDeCo, NISA, Monex, banks, city office, even immigration don’t need the details. So why would an employer?

Hello Work is getting much more active recently on keeping track of non-Japanese workers visa and working status.

This involves zairyu cards though.

I don't see any reason a company in Japan would need passport pages.

There's no reason a company would need your passport info. My company used to have mine because they helped me with visa renewals and stuff but if you don't depend on them for visas then the only (non-shady) reason I could think of is they want your passport details on file for whenever you have to go overseas for business trips and they will buy tickets for you.

Extra passport pages are nothing compared to taking a full health check and submitting your results to the company as a requirement to enter and ongoing required annual assessments! My blood!

I have a connected question.
Did you need to inform the Japanese immigration office about your new passport number.
I, too, also got a new UK passport and am wondering who I need to tell.
I want to avoid an unnecessary trip to immigration office - just wondering if anyone on this
site can answer this question.

Now that they no longer stick your visa in your passport, I believe this is not necessary. I remember going to immigration with my new passport just after they made the change, and they told me they didn't need to see it.

*not legal advice ;)

Last time I renewed my passport I didn't need to inform anyone and no one asked. Most institutions in Japan are only interested in your zairyu card so unless you update that, the other people don't care.

Thank you for your input.
I called the immigration office just to check the situation.
Apparently, when you renew your passport, the new passport
number is automatically forwarded to the Japanese immigration office.
In other words, they already know it and there is no need to
inform them of the new number.
Not quite sure what to think about that.

In banking, it called CRS, common reporting standard. A lot of financial info is exchanged between countries. (G20? maybe more?)

Don't even consider tax fraud--e.g., not reporting a foreign inheritance (income) since it seems like it's in some remote country, not in yen, and not going into a bank here...!
