Finding and completing tax return forms

Post by JimmyK »

I need to complete a tax return before the March 15th deadline. I can’t use the e-tax online system, as I don’t have a My Number card. In that case, I’ll be doing it old school. I understand you can do this at local tax office, but there must be a website where I can download and print out the necessary tax return forms at home first? I have the Japan national tax website with English info, but I can’t find any such forms anywhere. I have my gensen and a bunch of Furusato Nozei receipts. I don’t have any other deductibles, so I think I’m ready to go. Just need to know where/how to start and soon! Any advice greatly appreciated.

You can use eTax without a My Number card. Select that you want to use it to generate the forms to be printed out for manual submission (書面 / 印刷して提出).

But otherwise, you can take the forms that you have to the designated center for your city and fill it in there on a computer with someone helping you if you need it. Some areas are still requiring reservations at the centers in Tokyo and you need to reserve a time slot through LINE. These are the very concise English instructions so you'll have an idea about how the taxes are calculated.

If the OP just wants to report furusato nozei certificates, I personally would recommend trying to use the online site, too:
https://www.keisan.nta.go.jp/kyoutu/ky/smsp/top

The key parts will be entering info from the gensenchosyuhyou, and then subsequently finding the place to enter furusato nozei certificate info.

It’s a good idea to save the data along the way.

If you go to the Tax Office to file the Kakutei Shinkoku, you use the same Online system under the supervision/help of the staff at the tax office...

Sure. If one can figure it out on one’s home computer, great, but falling back to getting help at the tax office if stuck is a fine option too, and could probably be faster for a first timer. (I have stuck with doing it at home
to avoid queuing / spending time at my tax office in recent years... )

Also re-read this thread before you do any Furusato Nozei again this year, so you don't need to do a tax return next year.
