Hello,

Can anyone tell me how I can find out if I am eligible for medical expense deductions? I'm filing in a tax return.

I have paid medical expenses.

Thank you.

If your out of pocket expenses were over 100,000 yen, you can deduct the excess. If you do your taxes online and have connected your health card to your My Number card, it can pull in the information.

Similar question so don’t want to make a new thread.
My family’s health expenses last year were quite high due to unexpected surgery.
Last month I got a letter about the surgery cost being high so I could get a small reimbursement. (¥430, wow, thanks).
Anyway so now I’m doing the kakutei shinkoku online.
You mentioned about having myna linked making it easier.
What do I need to do? Any guides anywhere to help me through the process?
Thanks in advance.

I believe this is the latest edition of the NTA guide: https://www.nta.go.jp/english/taxes/ind ... 023/01.pdf

This Reddit thread is good to ask questions: https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanFinance/c ... ine_march/

https://www.nta.go.jp/taxes/shiraberu/s ... df/008.pdf

Fill out either this PDF

Page 1
https://www.nta.go.jp/taxes/shiraberu/s ... f/ref1.pdf
Page 2
https://www.nta.go.jp/taxes/shiraberu/s ... f/ref3.pdf

or this Excel Spreadsheet

https://www.nta.go.jp/taxes/shiraberu/s ... huukei.htm

Then, subtract Y100,000 from the total, and enter that number into Item 27 on Page 1 of the Kakutei Shinkoku Form.

That is the most awful site known to man. I just tried for 40 minutes to even get to the part in the guide that was right at the beginning to start entering income etc. but I couldn’t. The website kept requesting to log in through Mynaportal app. And every page it would request to log in again. Then because I’d logged in too many times it just timed me out and told me to try again later.
Doing it manually didn’t help either as the guide wasn’t accurate to what was on the forms and Google translate was not helpful.
How hard is it to
1. design a simple website
2. Know how much tax I’ve paid and how much healthcare I’ve paid and get the government to figure it out automatically.

They did vastly simplifiy it. Did you already get the Mynaportal sorted?
◆How to use a smartphone

Install the Mynaportal app
Launch the app and tap "Application for Health Insurance Card"
Check “Mynaportal Terms of Use” and tap “Agree and proceed”
Read your My Number card using your smartphone
Enter the PIN number (4-digit number) for the electronic certificate for user certification.

◆How to use a computer

Access the Mynaportal website
Click "Apply for use" on the page
Check the “Mynaportal Terms of Use” and click “Agree and proceed”
Insert your My Number card into the IC card reader and click "Apply"
Enter the PIN number (4-digit number) for the electronic certificate for user certification.
Step #2 - Log-in an view the info
Once you have completed registering your Myna Insurance Card, you will be able to check your medical expense information on Myna Portal. This is because Mynaportal is linked with the National Tax Agency's electronic filing and tax payment system " e-Tax ."

On Mynaportal, you can view and obtain monthly medical insurance medical expense notification information from September 2021 onwards. You can also view medical expense notification information from medical institutions and pharmacies that do not support Myna Health Insurance Cards. Please keep in mind that you will be able to view medical expense notification information from the 11th of the month following the month in which you visited a medical institution.
Step #3 - It should be automatically added when you file via E-tax
