House Insurance

Post by donpaulo »

Has anyone had any luck finding better insurance ?

Crikey the rates are high.

Earthquake payouts cover perhaps the cost of clearing out the collapsed house and not much more than that.

The fire payouts are decent enough so at least we don't have to worry about burning someone else out of their house.

5 man for minimal coverage seems tweaked

I have roughly Y20 million in coverage for my house (fire etc. only) for around Y1,300 a month. Didn't bother with earthquake insurance: as you noted, the coverage isn't very good relative to the cost and we're in a (relatively) safe area of Tokyo. If needed we'd cash flow any rebuild work. Although if the Big One hits it probably won't matter - and in that case we probably won't be around to worry about rebuilding

Am I overinsured? My father-in-law seems to love insurance - I just inherited the plan from him and paid over 100,000 yen for the year. Pretty sure this includes all types of disaster insurance plus contents.

Might be worth checking as that seems a tad steep ;)

Y100,000 a year for home insurance? Yes, that's insanely high.

I pay about 58,000 yen per year with Sony Sonpo. I am covered for all natural disasters except tsunamis ( I live atop a mountain).
Earthquake insurance is included. Also covers thefts, fires, lightning strikes etc..
Doesn't cover termite damage. Just had the house sprayed against termites.
I think it covers burst pipes as well.
I pay 58,000 yen a year for five years, then can continue or lock-in to another five-year plan.
I get a tax break for the earthquake insurance part, once a year.
