I wonder if this is significant--a possible indicator of things to come? Are they generously doing this on their own, at the urging of the gov't, or is there a solvency problem, loans due...?

I can see his point, but I don't agree with him. Mindful spending can help anyone become financially stronger. We can't all earn hundreds of thousands of dollars working in investment banking ;)
