Calling HMRC in March 2025

Post by RetireJapan »

Just called the HMRC phone line as described in the post below.

I had to wait around 45 minutes despite calling at 8am UK time when the phone lines opened.

I was calling to confirm that they had received the money I sent them in November and that they were going to apply it to my account, and the agent was able to do that. He said it could take up to 50 weeks to show up in my online account

If they can confirm the transfer and that it is yours you have to wonder what on earth can take a year to credit it to your account. Sounds like, after the verification is done it should be as simple as clicking a button.

I suspect the time-consuming bit is that someone needs to take the lump sum and manually reconcile it with payments for individual years, and they have a massive backlog and likely not enough people. I'm sure there must be a more efficient way of doing it though...

As mentioned in another thread on this, the person I spoke to on the phone earlier this month said it would take about 8 weeks for Class 2 NICs and a year or so for Class 3s.

Just checked and the bank transfer with my backpayments to 2006 has gone through, so looking forward to my account update by the second half of the decade...

Just to add my experience, after backpaying 16 years in August 24 my online record was finally updated this week. So that would be 8 months give or take. It sure was a relief to see it there.

Has anyone managed to get through to them on +44 191 203 7010 since the deadline?

I have been trying to call these past few days from 8am UK time, but can never get through to an operator, it won't let me stay on hold for one to become available either.

Each time, it basically it goes through around 5 minutes of messages and security questions (NI number, postcode etc) and then just tells me that their operators are all very busy, please try another time and hangs up on me...

No luck here. I've called them a few times in the last few weeks and the exact thing happens to me.

I sent them the payment, which they processed straight away, back in June 2024. I have called them about 10 times since then because it was taking so long, and then they finally processed the payment but for the wrong years, with most of my years since showing as gaps.
