invested in eMAXIS Slim 全世界株式(オール・カントリー)

Post by olitheone »

hey guys, I have been in Japan for 9 years, 34 now and trying to sort out my finacial state so I decided to invest 150,000 yen to start off in eMAXIS Slim 全世界株式(オール・カントリー) .

It's gone down to 147,000. I'm new to investing but is this because of some Trump tariff thing? Should I remove it before I lose everything?? What are other people doing??

Completely normal. Just ignore the price movements (when it goes down you get to buy it on sale). Keep putting money in.

In a couple of decades you'll have a lot more money.

Keep on investing regularly, and Dollar Cost Averaging will bring your Average Price per Unit down as the price falls and you are able to buy more and more units for the same Dollar or Yen Amount every period, and over the long-term your Average Price per Unit will be very low, and in the next economic cycle, or the one after that (about every 10 years) you will have accumulated quite a pile ;-)

thanks for the advice.

Are there any other funds I should invest in? I heard this emaxis all country is the best for Japan but are there others for diversification?

You are the only person who will know whether there are other types of assets (and therefore funds etc) you should invest in.

Going all in stocks as the all country stocks fund does will probably do you well enough over the long run, but you might find yourself starring at large unrealized losses from time to time as global stock prices display a higher degree of risk than other assets such as bonds. But they will always bounce back hard.

If you find yourself having sleepiness nights or something like that then you might want to diversify into some other assets classes beyond stocks, such as bonds (or gold or REITs) that have less risk.

If you don't need to use the money for decades then ideally you'll forget about it and won't bother to look see how it is doing except every year or so.

Going from 150,000 to 147,000 yen is a cute unrealized loss of 2%. It's going to go up and down, but many of those stocks you own in there will pay dividends etc over time, and thus the value that you own will snowball over years into the future.

I may end up investing in gold but seems like a good idea to wait until a big drop.
Just wondering if there are any other good ideas to invest in right now in terms of timing since this year I'm planning on just investing half my salary.

Ideally, you should buy some more.
You have 20 or 30 years until retirement, maybe. Keep buying as regularly as you can, ignore the 'noise' and as RJ says, you should be comfortable when you need that money.
Aiming to retire at 60 and live for a while longer. 95% index funds (eMaxis Slim etc), 5% Japanese dividend stocks.

I recommend you read a book about investing. They are about to release a new edition of The Simple Path to Wealth. I've not read it, but I read the blog and it's good.

I get paid on Friday. My monthly salary is about 450k so I am now planning to invest another 250k and just live frugally until next pay check. I think this year I'll just invest half of my salary since I'm just sitting around doing remote work and playing videogames anyway, nothing too exciting happening in my life. Next year I'll cut my investments to 100k a month.

Your life, your money.
I don't think anyone would suggest investing and risking not being able to pay the bills. So make sure you can take care of regular outgoings and have some put aside for an emergency. Then invest as much as you comfortably can. Your future self will thank you for the effort.
