Welcome to The Monday Read, RetireJapan’s weekly collection of content, musings, and links related to personal finance and life in Japan.

Miyakojima week 2. Still love it here.

So much so that I have idly started thinking about moving here, or at least spending chunks of the year here. You can see a lot of photos and stories on my personal Twitter account.

I will keep you posted!

Fame

Had my first taste of fame this week. I was sitting outside the Shogun Burger truck, and a guy speaking French with his wife and child came up and said ‘I follow you on Twitter’.

Fortunately he was really nice, so it was a positive experience.

I remarked to my wife later though that maybe I should look into engaging bodyguards for future trips.

YouTube

Thank you for your support of the RetireJapan YouTube channel. We did not publish any new videos this week. Heh.

Please go and watch one of our older ones though 😉

This week’s books

The guy at the second dive shop I’ve been using on Miyakojima (the first one wasn’t great, so I switched) recommended Between the Devil and the Deep, which is about the guy who taught him to use a rebreather (Martin Robson). It’s pretty interesting. Terrifying, of course. I really don’t want to get decompression sickness now. Or go cave diving. But an interesting book, despite the author’s mediocre writing skills (he’s a journalist apparently, but his writing would not pass muster with Strunk & White).

This week’s links

  1. This sounds like me… I have the money aspect nailed down, but need to work on other stuff: What can you do for someone who is already a sensible saver?
  2. Which is personal finance? Complex or complicated?
  3. Really like this, especially #6: A Few Laws of Getting Rich
  4. I like them! Bad Returns in the Market Aren’t Always Bad
  5. I’m going to try this when I get back to Sendai: How to Make Your Mind Maybe One-Third Quieter
  6. This is a constant theme for me: walking the line between useful and harmful. On Disruption and Distraction
  7. I would love to see this law changed, but until it is it should be applied consistently: When Japan’s dual nationality ban meets a legal gray zone
  8. This would be interesting: Is an LDP-Kōmeitō breakup coming?

What do you think? Anything interesting in there?

    1. It would be quite limiting, unless you were based in the main town, and then you would miss out on the nature and beaches.

For me a car, or at the very least a scooter or bicycle, would be essential. The island is small enough that you could cycle around it quite easily, and only one hill 😉
